January 1, 2023 brought in a new year and our first ambush attack of police officers in New York City. Imagine being a police officer at Times Square on NYE surrounded by millions of people and thousands of possible threats. Even with their situational awareness at the highest levels, a radical extremist was able to severely injure 3 police officers. If someone was able to attack highly trained police officers, what chance do WE have?
No one is immune from random violence. Let's start the new year with a renewed sense of awareness. Let's limit our distraction's by keeping our phone use to a minimum when out and about. Walking while texting or reading emails is keeping your head down, causing you to lose visual indicators as you move. Try to stay in groups as you increase your safety with numbers. When something feels "off" don't dismiss or deny it. Focus and begin your safety assessments. In our courses we discuss the OODA Loop... if you encounter that "off" situation, take a moment and observe what is going on, orient yourself to know what move you'll make should things escalate. Be ready to decide and act if necessary.
When it's time to move.......move! Don't stay for the event, move to safety immediately. Videotaping and social media footage isn't worth risking your life. Things escalate quickly and you may not have another opportunity for a safe and successful getaway.
